    About the role#

    This externship program provides hands-on experience in emergency medicine for students currently enrolled in veterinary technology or nursing programs. You will work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to gain real-time experience in an emergency hospital setting. This is an unpaid program designed to help you build a foundation in emergency care and determine if this field is the right path for your future career.

    What you'll do#

    • Pair with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
    • Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
    • Practice specific skills required by your school proficiency checklist.
    • Experience the teamwork and pace of emergency care at VEG.
    • Explore the day-to-day realities of working in an emergency hospital.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
    • Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
    • Ability to start the program within six months of your application.
    • Proof of current rabies vaccination or titer.
    • Ability to stand for long periods, kneel, and work on the floor.
    • Ability to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
    • Comfort working in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
    • Ability to work well with diverse people in a high-volume setting.
