    About the role#

    This externship provides an immersive, hands-on experience in emergency medicine. You will work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to gain exposure to the daily realities of an emergency hospital. This program is designed to help you build a strong foundation and determine if emergency medicine is the right career path for you.

    What you'll do#

    • Pair with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
    • Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
    • Practice skills required by your school proficiency checklist under guidance.
    • Experience the teamwork and pace of emergency care.
    • Explore if you want to pursue a career as an emergency veterinary technician.

    What you'll need#

    • Currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program seeking accreditation.
    • Enrolled in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
    • Ability to start the program within six months of application.
    • Current rabies vaccination or titer.
    • Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
    • Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
    • Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
    • Ability to work with people from all backgrounds and personality types.
