    About the role#

    This externship program offers a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine. You will work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians to build a strong foundation in the field. This is an unpaid opportunity designed to help you explore emergency medicine and determine if it is the right career path for you.

    What you'll do#

    • Pair up with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
    • Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
    • Practice specific skills required by your school proficiency checklist.
    • Experience the teamwork and pace of emergency care.
    • Explore the daily reality of working as an emergency veterinary technician.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
    • Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
    • Ability to start the program within six months of application.
    • Current rabies vaccination or titer.
    • Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
    • Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
    • Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
    • Ability to work well with people from all backgrounds and personality types.
