About the role#
The Veterinary Technician Student Externship offers an immersive, hands-on experience in emergency medicine. You will work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians to gain real-world exposure to the field. This program is designed to help you build a foundation of skills, ask questions, and determine if a career in emergency veterinary medicine is the right path for you.
What you'll do#
- Pair with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school’s proficiency checklist under professional guidance.
- Experience the teamwork and pace that defines emergency care.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work well with people from all backgrounds.
