About the role#
This externship program provides an immersive, hands-on experience in emergency veterinary medicine. You will work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to gain exposure to the daily operations of an emergency hospital. This role is designed for students to build a foundation in emergency care, practice clinical skills, and determine if this field is the right path for their future career.
What you'll do#
- Pair with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school’s proficiency checklist with guidance from your mentor.
- Experience the teamwork and pace that defines emergency care.
- Explore the realities of working in an emergency setting.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- Proof of current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work with people from all backgrounds and personality types.
