About the role#
The Veterinary Technician Student Externship offers a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine. Students work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians to build a strong foundation in the field. This program is designed to help students gain exposure to emergency care, ask questions, and explore professional interests in a clinical setting.
What you'll do#
- Learn from emergency veterinary professionals through real-time mentoring.
- Pair with a credentialed veterinary technician for on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice skills required by your school proficiency checklist under guidance.
- Experience the teamwork and pace of emergency veterinary care.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Proof of current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on your own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
