Veterinary Technician Student Externship

About the role#

The Veterinary Technician Student Externship provides a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine. You will work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians to build a strong foundation in the field, gain exposure to the pace of emergency care, and explore professional opportunities in veterinary medicine.

What you'll do#

• Learn from emergency veterinary professionals through real-time mentoring.
• Pair with a credentialed veterinary technician for on-the-floor training.
• Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
• Practice skills required by your school’s proficiency checklist under guidance.
• Experience the teamwork and pace of an emergency veterinary environment.

What you'll need#

• Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program.
• Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
• Current rabies vaccination or titer.
• Ability to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
• Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
• Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
