About the role#
This externship program offers hands-on experience in emergency veterinary medicine. You will work alongside credentialed veterinary technicians to gain exposure to the reality of emergency care. This program is designed for students to build a foundation, ask questions, and explore a potential future in the emergency field.
What you'll do#
- Pair up with an emergency credentialed veterinary technician for real-time mentoring and on-the-floor learning.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice skills required by your school’s proficiency checklist.
- Experience the teamwork and pace of emergency care.
- Explore future career interests in emergency medicine.
What you'll need#
- Currently enrolled in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program actively seeking accreditation.
- Enrolled in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Able to start the program within six months of application.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged hours, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg on own and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work with people from all backgrounds and personality types.
- Empathetic and people-centric approach.
- A sense of humility and a strong sense of ownership.
- A curious nature.
