About the role#
This externship program provides hands-on experience in emergency veterinary medicine. You will work alongside credentialed emergency veterinary technicians to gain real-time mentoring and on-the-floor training. This role is designed for students to explore emergency medicine and determine if it is the right career path for them.
What you'll do#
- Learn from emergency veterinary professionals.
- Pair with a credentialed veterinary technician for mentorship.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school proficiency checklist.
- Experience the teamwork and pace of an emergency hospital.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program, or a program seeking accreditation.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Ability to start the program within six months of application.
- A current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Physical ability to stand for long periods, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Comfort working in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
- Ability to work with people from diverse backgrounds and personality types.
