About the role#
The Veterinary Technician Student Externship provides a hands-on, immersive experience in emergency medicine. Working alongside credentialed veterinary technicians, students engage directly with the daily operations of an emergency hospital to build a strong professional foundation and explore a career in the field.
What you'll do#
- Learn from emergency veterinary professionals through real-time mentoring.
- Shadow and assist with triage, outpatient visits, diagnostics, anesthesia, and inpatient care.
- Practice specific skills required by your school’s proficiency checklist.
- Experience the teamwork and pace of emergency veterinary care.
- Evaluate your interest in pursuing a career in emergency medicine.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an AVMA-accredited veterinary technology or nursing program.
- Enrollment in a course that requires externship hours or skills.
- Current rabies vaccination or titer.
- Ability to stand for prolonged periods, kneel, and work on the floor.
- Ability to lift up to 25 kg independently and support up to 40 kg with assistance.
- Willingness to work in a noisy environment with strong or unpleasant odors.
