The University of South Florida is seeking an Electrical Engineering intern for the Summer 2026 term. This position supports advanced engineering research and development, including projects related to Department of Defense initiatives. Interns gain hands-on experience with embedded systems, robotics, and sensing technologies while working alongside professional engineers. Due to the nature of the funding, U.S. citizenship is required.
What you'll do#
- Assist with the design, integration, and testing of electrical and embedded systems.
- Support the development and programming of Raspberry Pi-based systems and sensor networks.
- Interface and troubleshoot sensors, communications modules, and peripheral devices using Raspberry Pi GPIO and protocols including I2C, SPI, and UART.
- Develop and maintain Python scripts for data collection, automation, and sensor integration.
- Support laboratory testing, prototype development, and system validation activities.
- Conduct technical research on emerging sensing technologies and embedded platforms.
- Collaborate with multidisciplinary engineering teams to support experimentation and document technical findings.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Robotics, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- Junior or Senior standing with a minimum GPA of 3.0.
- Experience with Raspberry Pi hardware and Linux-based systems.
- Proficiency in Python programming.
- Familiarity with electronics, sensors, GPIO interfaces, and embedded systems.
- Preferred: Experience with soldering, breadboarding, and hardware troubleshooting.
- Interest in robotics, autonomous systems, data acquisition, or specialized fields such as subsea sensing, underwater acoustics, or sonar systems.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.

- Location: Tampa, Florida.
- Modality: On-site at USF IAE facilities.
- Term: Summer 2026.
- Compensation: $18.50 per hour.
- Hours: 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday.
