Research Internship – Reinforcement Learning for Large Foundation Models

About the role#

Tencent AI Lab is seeking research interns for 2026 to focus on reinforcement learning (RL) for large foundation models. This role involves developing stable and efficient algorithms to improve the reasoning, autonomous exploration, and continuous learning capabilities of these models. Interns will work directly with researchers on projects involving RL algorithms, reward modeling, and world models.

What you'll do#

• Develop stable and efficient RL algorithms for large foundation models.
• Conduct large-scale experiments in areas such as complex reasoning and autonomous agents.
• Deliver impactful algorithms for real-world applications.
• Collaborate with researchers to publish influential research papers.

What you'll need#

• Currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field from a top university.
• Proven research experience in natural language processing or machine learning.
• Proficiency in Python programming.
• Experience developing with deep learning frameworks, specifically PyTorch.
• A strong publication track record and demonstrated intellectual flexibility.
• Excellent communication and teamwork skills.

• Term: Summer 2026 (3-month duration with possibility of extension).
• Employment: Full-time, paid internship.
• Compensation: Base pay range of $80,168.40 to $124,800.00 per year.
