About the role#
Summit Utilities is seeking a Data Scientist Intern to help develop solutions that support the operations of our natural gas utility. You will work alongside experienced data scientists and AI professionals to assist with data exploration, feature engineering, and model development. Your work will influence various business areas, including field operations, asset maintenance, gas supply planning, and customer analysis.
What you'll do#
- Build, validate, and iterate on statistical, machine learning, and optimization models.
- Perform exploratory data analysis and data profiling on various datasets, including work orders, weather patterns, and pipeline telemetry.
- Contribute to model development pipelines using Microsoft Fabric.
- Conduct data quality checks and validate model inputs and outputs.
- Create clear visualizations and summaries to explain your findings.
- Document your analytical logic, data sources, and assumptions.
- Complete a final project and present your results to the AI and Enterprise Data teams and leadership.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor's or master's degree program in Data Science, Statistics, Mathematics, Operations Research, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related quantitative field. Rising juniors, seniors, and graduate students are preferred.
- Academic or project experience involving statistics, machine learning, or quantitative analytics.
- Familiarity with the model development process, including data preparation, training, and evaluation.
- Working knowledge of Python for data analysis using pandas, NumPy, scikit-learn, and matplotlib or seaborn.
- Foundational skills in SQL.
- A solid grasp of core statistical and machine learning concepts like regression, classification, and model validation.
- Interest in time-series analysis and forecasting, including techniques like ARIMA or Bayesian methods.
- A willingness to learn Microsoft Fabric, Azure DevOps, and Git.
- Strong communication skills and a solution-oriented approach.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms such as Azure, Snowflake, or Databricks is a plus.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship.
- The role is based on-site in Fort Smith, Fayetteville, or Little Rock, Arkansas.
- Hiring is conducted on a rolling basis.
