About the role#
Summit Utilities is seeking a Data Engineer Intern to support the development, maintenance, and enhancement of enterprise data pipelines. You will work alongside senior engineers, analysts, and database administrators to build real data solutions. This role is designed for students who want hands-on experience in an enterprise-scale environment.
What you'll do#
- Assist senior engineers with building, testing, and maintaining data pipelines that ingest and transform data.
- Write, troubleshoot, and optimize SQL queries and views.
- Implement data quality checks, logging, and documentation to ensure pipeline reliability.
- Participate in team activities including standups, sprint planning, code reviews, and source control practices.
- Shadow support ticket and on-call response processes.
- Complete an assigned project and present your results to the data and analytics team.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a bachelor's or master's degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Data Analytics, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, or a related field. Rising junior or senior standing is preferred.
- Academic or project experience involving databases, data analysis, or software development.
- Experience writing SQL queries against a relational database.
- Familiarity with a programming or scripting language such as Python.
- Foundational understanding of relational databases and core data concepts.
- Interest in data pipelines, ETL/ELT concepts, and workflow automation.
- Strong problem-solving skills and clear verbal and written communication.
- A self-motivated and coachable attitude.
Location & details#
- This is an on-site, paid, full-time internship.
- Positions are available in Fort Smith, Fayetteville, or Little Rock, Arkansas.
- The internship term is rolling.
