About the role#
The Oregon Public Defense Commission offers externship opportunities for law students interested in criminal defense and public service. This program provides practical experience within the Trial Division, allowing students to work alongside public defense attorneys. Please note that this is an unpaid externship. Externs are not considered employees of the Oregon Public Defense Commission and do not receive salary, wages, or benefits.
What you'll do#
- Assist with legal research and writing.
- Engage in case preparation and client-related work.
- Observe courtroom proceedings.
- Support public defense attorneys on various projects related to the delivery of public defense services.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an ABA accredited law school.
- Successful completion of the first year of law school.
- A valid driver’s license.
- Legal authorization to work in the United States.
- Strong legal research and writing skills.

- Locations: Portland, Salem, and Medford, Oregon.
- Term: Fall 2026.
