    About the role#

    The Montana Department of Transportation is hiring a Mechanic Intern to work at the Havre shop during the fall of 2026. This role runs from October through December. You will work variable hours that fit around your class schedule. This is a paid internship.

    What you'll do#

    • Assist with the maintenance and repair of automobiles, light and heavy-duty trucks, and construction equipment.
    • Diagnose, adjust, and replace nonfunctional parts and control instruments.
    • Repair and replace tires on vehicles and equipment.
    • Lubricate and clean mechanical parts.
    • Perform minor repairs without supervision.
    • Use the Equipment Vehicle Maintenance Management System (EVMMS) to process work orders and update vehicle repair records.
    • Maintain electronic records of time, materials, and preventive maintenance service.
    • Clean the shop area, including general janitorial tasks, grounds maintenance, and snow removal.

    What you'll need#

    • Current enrollment at MSU Northern studying mechanics, machining, welding, or fabrication.
    • Completion of at least 30 credit hours by the end of the fall 2026 semester.
    • The ability to perform physical tasks, including lifting over 50 pounds, carrying items, and operating various tools and equipment.
    • Operational knowledge of shop tools such as forklifts, measuring gauges, diagnostic equipment, and parts washers.
