About the role#
The State of Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation is hiring an Engineering Intern to support the operation, inspection, and maintenance of state-owned dams and water resources infrastructure. You will work under the supervision of licensed Professional Engineers to gain practical experience in dam safety, infrastructure assessment, and regulatory compliance. This role serves as an entry point for your career and supports professional development toward Professional Engineer licensure.
What you'll do#
- Assist with annual dam safety and operations-and-maintenance inspections.
- Evaluate infrastructure conditions and help identify maintenance, repair, or safety needs.
- Support field visits, data collection, and incident-response activities.
- Assist with engineering calculations, technical studies, designs, and project reports.
- Support construction and modification projects for dams and water infrastructure.
- Manage dam instrumentation, data review, and automation efforts.
- Prepare and maintain regulatory evaluations, emergency action plans, and inspection records.
- Collaborate with agency staff, contractors, consultants, and water users' associations.
What you'll need#
- A bachelor’s or master’s degree in civil engineering, engineering technology, or a closely related field from an ABET-accredited program.
- A valid driver's license.
- Foundational knowledge of civil engineering principles.
- The ability to interpret technical data, engineering plans, and specifications.
- Proficiency in performing engineering calculations and preparing field documentation.
- A willingness to learn tools such as CAD, GIS, and engineering modeling programs.
- The ability to perform fieldwork at dams and water facilities, including travel and work in changing outdoor conditions.
- Certification as an Engineer Intern (EI) is preferred.
Location & details#
- This position is based in Helena, Montana.
- This is a full-time, paid, on-site role.
- The position requires approximately 30% travel and fieldwork.
- Fieldwork may occasionally occur outside normal business hours.
