About the role#
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) is seeking a Technical Intern for the Summer 2027 term. This is a full-time, on-site position based in Washington, D.C. You will work alongside experienced engineers in the office and in the field to apply your academic knowledge to real-world engineering challenges.
What you'll do#
- Assist with construction monitoring, field investigations, condition assessments, and construction observations.
- Perform project drafting, structural design, and analysis.
- Conduct site inspections and collaborate on reconnaissance of existing structures.
- Analyze materials and support petrography staff.
- Develop test protocols, design and build testing apparatus, and perform data analysis.
- Organize field data and assist with research to support problem solving and repair design.
- Perform engineering analysis using hand calculations and software.
- Help prepare client deliverables, such as construction documents, specifications, and written reports.
- Note that this work may involve travel and working from heights.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in or plans to complete a MS degree in Civil, Structural, or Architectural engineering.
- Interest in civil engineering, structural engineering, materials science, or architecture.
- A record of high academic achievement.
- A desire to learn through hands-on work in a consulting environment.
- Enthusiasm for developing sophisticated engineering work products.
- Strong communication abilities.
