About the role#
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) is looking for a Technical Intern to join the Fire Protection team in New York City for the Summer 2027 term. You will work alongside licensed professionals to apply classroom knowledge to real-world engineering challenges. This is a full-time, paid, on-site position.
What you'll do#
- Assist with construction monitoring, field investigations, condition assessments, and construction observations.
- Support project drafting, structural design, analysis, and site inspections.
- Analyze materials and support petrography staff.
- Develop test protocols, build testing apparatus, perform tests, and analyze the resulting data.
- Collaborate with engineers to perform reconnaissance on existing structures, conduct field tests, or monitor construction progress.
- Organize field data and conduct research to assist with problem-solving and repair design.
- Perform analysis using hand calculations and software under the guidance of licensed professionals.
- Help prepare client deliverables, including construction documents, specifications, and written reports.
- Note that work may require travel and working from heights.
What you'll need#
- An interest in Fire Protection engineering.
- A record of high academic achievement.
- A desire to learn through hands-on work experience.
- Enthusiasm for developing sophisticated engineering work products.
- Strong communication skills.
Location & details#
- Location: New York, New York.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- This is a full-time, on-site internship.
- Compensation: Undergraduate students earn $29.25 to $32.50 per hour, graduate students earn $33.75 to $34.75 per hour, and PhD students earn $36.75 per hour. A $1,000 sign-on bonus is included.
- Benefits: Full-time temporary employees are eligible for medical insurance, paid holidays, and sick leave.
