About the role#
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger is seeking a Technical Intern for the Summer 2027 term in our Waltham, Massachusetts office. You will work alongside experienced engineers in both the office and the field to gain hands-on experience by applying your classroom knowledge to real-world engineering challenges.
What you'll do#
- Assist with construction monitoring, field investigations, condition assessments, and construction observations.
- Perform project drafting, structural design and analysis, and site inspections.
- Analyze materials and support petrography staff.
- Develop test protocols, design and build testing apparatus, perform tests, and analyze the resulting data.
- Collaborate with engineers to perform reconnaissance on existing structures, conduct field tests, or monitor construction progress.
- Organize field data and conduct research to support analysis, problem solving, and repair design.
- Perform analysis under the guidance of licensed professionals using hand calculations and analysis software.
- Assist in preparing client deliverables, including construction documents, specifications, and written reports.
- Please note that work may include travel and working from heights.
What you'll need#
- An interest in Fire Protection engineering.
- A record of maintaining high grades in your studies.
- A desire to learn through hands-on work in a consulting engineering environment.
- Enthusiasm for the challenges of developing sophisticated engineering work products.
- Strong communication abilities.
Location & details#
- Location: Waltham, Massachusetts.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: This is an on-site, full-time position.
- Compensation: This is a paid internship. Undergraduate students earn between $29.25 and $32.50 per hour, graduate students earn between $33.75 and $34.75 per hour, and PhD students earn $36.75 per hour. Technical Interns are eligible for a $1,000 sign-on bonus.
