About the role#
Simpson Gumpertz & Heger (SGH) is looking for students to join our team as Technical Interns for the Summer 2027 term. You will work alongside experts in the office and in the field to apply your classroom knowledge to real-world structural engineering challenges. This is a full-time, paid position based on-site in Newport Beach, Orange County, or San Diego, California.
What you'll do#
- Develop practical solutions to structural engineering challenges.
- Support projects for critical infrastructure, including nuclear and non-nuclear power generation, storage, and national defense installations.
- Build analytical models to evaluate the performance of buildings, mechanical systems, and non-structural components.
- Perform structural analysis and design under the guidance of licensed professionals.
- Create client deliverables such as formal calculation packages, written reports, and presentation slides.
- Collaborate with researchers to support advancements in the structural engineering field.
- Develop digital tools to improve engineering workflows and productivity.
- Conduct field tests, monitor construction, or perform reconnaissance on existing structures.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in a Civil Engineering or Architecture program.
- Strong academic performance.
- Interest in structural engineering, materials science, or architectural engineering.
- Desire to learn through hands-on experience in a consulting environment.
- Enthusiasm for developing sophisticated engineering work products.
- Strong communication skills.
