About the role#
Shawnee Animal Hospital offers a DVM externship program for students currently in their clinical curriculum. This program provides practical experience in a mixed practice setting to help you prepare for life after graduation. You will work alongside our veterinary team to gain hands-on experience and meet the requirements of your college program. The program is flexible, with rotations typically lasting two to three weeks, though they can range from two to eight weeks. Your schedule includes days, evenings, and weekends.
What you'll do#
Under the supervision of a mentor doctor, you will participate in all aspects of patient care. Your responsibilities include:
- Gathering patient histories
- Performing physical examinations
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans
- Scrubbing in to surgery
- Assisting in the management of medical cases
- Providing wellness care
- Developing client communication skills
- Polishing technical skills
- Producing medical records, including SOAPs
You will be assigned a mentor to help you meet your specific learning goals and will receive a written evaluation of your performance at the end of your rotation.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited DVM program
- Authorization to work in the United States
- Proof of professional liability insurance
Students are expected to maintain professional conduct and follow the Veterinary Practice Act regarding the scope of duties and supervision requirements.
