NIWC - Undergraduate Student III - PFAS In-Situ Stabilization Evaluations (Task No. 71-332604)

About the role#

This position provides analytical and technical support for research on PFAS-impacted sediments at Navy installations. The work focuses on the deployment of the Remedy and Recontamination Assessment (RARA) array to evaluate the efficacy of sorptive technologies and in-situ stabilization strategies. This is a paid, part-time student role requiring 20 hours of work per week.

What you'll do#

• Mobilize and prepare equipment for RARA deployments.
• Improve RARA units to facilitate groundwater discharge.
• Conduct bench-scale experiments to test sorbents and bioaccumulation following standard protocols.
• Process samples and data collected during field deployments.
• Perform data analysis using Microsoft Excel and statistical software.
• Maintain laboratory facilities, including cleaning glassware and calibrating water quality meters.
• Care for test organisms and cultures.
• Conduct literature searches and assist in report preparation.

What you'll need#

• Must be at the Senior level and currently majoring in Marine Biology, Biology, Engineering, Environmental Science, or Chemistry.
• Must have completed relevant coursework in the requested discipline.
• Experience in 100% of the task requirements and the ability to complete 90% of the work independently.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and statistical software.
• US Citizenship is required to meet Department of Defense regulations.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret security clearance.

Location & details#

• Location: San Diego, California (On-site at NIWC Pacific, Bayside).
• Compensation: $19.67 per hour.
• Requirements: Must reside in California within a commutable distance of SDSU. Employment is contingent upon a satisfactory background check.
