This internship provides hands-on training in wastewater operations, supporting the goal of achieving an MDEQ Class D license. The role involves working under the supervision of the Utilities Manager to learn the maintenance, repair, and operation of mechanical and electrical equipment within a wastewater treatment facility. This is a full-time, on-site position for the Fall 2026 term.
What you'll do#
- Set up the lab and calibrate analytic equipment for sampling ammonia, BOD, pH, and dissolved oxygen.
- Perform daily and biweekly lab analytics required by EPA permit regulations.
- Collect and prepare samples according to EPA and DEQ standards.
- Assist with the maintenance of flow proportional equipment, reactors, and injection pumps.
- Troubleshoot and adjust processes to address changing parameters in raw sewage.
- Take required training classes offered by Indian Health, USEPA, DEQ, and the Michigan Rural Water Association.
- Assist maintenance staff and perform wastewater readings at lift stations, including during weekends and holidays.
What you'll need#
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Must be at least 18 years of age.
- Must be a member of the Saginaw Chippewa Indian Tribe.
- Aptitude for math and chemistry.
- Ability to perform manual labor, including lifting up to 50 pounds, climbing ladders, and working in adverse environmental conditions.
- Willingness to take courses in microbiology, advanced math, and algebra.
- Ability to pass a background check and maintain a valid driver's license.
