About the role#
Rye Harrison Veterinary Hospital offers an externship program for veterinary students to gain practical experience outside of the teaching hospital. You will work alongside our veterinary team to build your problem-solving, technical, and communication skills. The program is flexible, with rotations typically lasting two to three weeks, though they can range from two to eight weeks depending on your curriculum. Your schedule will include days, evenings, and weekends.
What you'll do#
You will participate in all aspects of patient care under the supervision of a mentor doctor. Your responsibilities include:
- Gathering patient histories
- Performing physical examinations
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans
- Scrubbing in to surgery
- Assisting in the management of medical cases
- Providing wellness care
- Developing client communication skills
- Polishing technical skills
- Producing medical records, including SOAPs
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program
- Authorization to work in the United States
- Current professional liability insurance
