About the role#
This externship program provides 4th-year veterinary students with hands-on experience in a small animal practice. You will work alongside our veterinary team to gain practical skills and prepare for post-graduation practice. We offer flexible rotations ranging from two to eight weeks, though most students complete two or three weeks. You will be assigned a mentor who provides instruction and completes a written evaluation of your performance at the end of the program.
What you'll do#
Under the supervision of a mentor doctor, you will participate in all aspects of patient care. Your daily responsibilities include:
- Gathering histories and performing physical examinations.
- Developing diagnostic and therapeutic plans.
- Scrubbing in to surgery and assisting in medical case management.
- Providing wellness care.
- Practicing client communication and technical skills.
- Producing medical records (SOAPs).
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an accredited DVM program, specifically entering your 4th year.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Current professional liability insurance (AVMA PLIT).
- Ability to work a schedule that includes days, evenings, and weekends.
