Robotics Systems Intern - Sensor Platform

About the role#

As a Robotics Systems Intern on the Sensor Platform team, you will help evaluate and optimize production-intended sensors for autonomous trucks. You will work at the intersection of hardware and software to characterize sensor behavior, improve multi-sensor time synchronization, and integrate safety-relevant diagnostics into the platform.

What you'll do#

• Design and execute sensor evaluation experiments for LiDARs, radars, and other production sensors.
• Characterize bandwidth, latency, jitter, and packet loss for various sensor configurations.
• Contribute to sensor driver and data pipeline improvements using C++ and Python.
• Analyze and improve multi-sensor time synchronization, including PTP/gPTP, NIC hardware timestamps, and clock offset measurements.
• Investigate phase alignment between LiDAR, radar, GNSS/IMU, and vehicle motion signals to support fusion and perception performance.
• Support the integration of sensor safety concepts, such as health and status monitoring.
• Build tooling and dashboards to visualize sensor performance metrics like latency histograms and bandwidth plots.
• Document findings and present technical recommendations to the robotics, perception, and systems teams.

What you'll need#

• Strong coding skills in C++ and/or C and Python.
• Proficiency working in Linux, including shell usage, compiling code, and log inspection.
• Experience capturing and analyzing sensor traffic using tools such as tcpdump, Wireshark, or custom logging pipelines.
• Strong interest in systems-level performance, specifically profiling, bottleneck analysis, and latency measurement.
• Pursuing a degree in Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or Mechanical Engineering.
