Research Engineer Intern - Mapping & Localization

About the role#

As a Research Engineer Intern on the Mapping and Localization team, you will contribute to the design and implementation of an automated, end-to-end Map Change Detection Pipeline. You will process incoming data from the active testing fleet, compare it against base high-definition (HD) maps, and isolate permanent structural changes from daily clutter. This work directly supports the automated map-updating engine, which is essential for the safety and scalability of autonomous trucks.

What you'll do#

• Design, develop, and optimize LiDAR-based localization and mapping algorithms to enhance vehicle autonomy.
• Refine online and offline map generation algorithms to improve and sustain localization precision.
• Advance the functionality and user experience of the LiDAR map interface, with a focus on robust management of map versions.
• Merge LiDAR data with sensory inputs such as GPS, IMU, and cameras to create integrated, real-time mapping and localization solutions.
• Take on complex projects to push the boundaries of autonomous vehicle technology.

What you'll need#

• MS or PhD in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Data Science, Computer Engineering, Robotics, or a related discipline.
• Proven project experience in LiDAR-based localization and mapping within autonomous vehicles or robotics.
• Deep understanding of integrating sensors including LiDAR, GPS, IMU, and cameras.
• Solid experience in C++ and ROS.
• Ability to communicate complex technical details effectively across multidisciplinary teams and to non-technical team members.
• Experience with Gaussian splatting/NeRF and deep learning techniques applied to localization and mapping is a plus.
