About the role#
Petersen Pet Hospital offers a flexible externship and preceptorship program for veterinary students. This program provides hands-on experience in a small animal practice to help you prepare for your career after graduation. You will work alongside our veterinary team to practice clinical skills and participate in patient care under the supervision of a mentor doctor. Rotations typically last two to three weeks, though they can range from two to eight weeks to fit your college curriculum. Your schedule will include days, evenings, and weekends. A stipend of $250 per week is provided.
What you'll do#
- Gather patient histories and perform physical examinations.
- Develop diagnostic and therapeutic plans for medical cases.
- Scrub in to surgery and assist in surgical procedures.
- Provide wellness care for patients.
- Develop client communication skills.
- Produce medical records including SOAPs.
- Work with a mentor to meet your specific learning objectives.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an accredited DVM program.
- Authorization to work in the United States.
- Proof of professional liability insurance.
- Ability to maintain professional conduct and follow the Veterinary Practice Act.
