About the role#
The Mechanical Engineer Intern will assist with the design, analysis, and development of mechanical and structural systems for wind tunnel and hypersonic ground test facilities. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to gain exposure to custom equipment design, fluid systems, structural analysis, and manufacturing processes.
What you'll do#
- Assist with the design and development of mechanical components and subsystems, including steel structures, piping, mechanisms, and process equipment.
- Support 3D CAD modeling and the preparation of engineering drawings, bills of materials, and procurement specifications.
- Perform engineering calculations and finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate structural performance and validate designs.
- Research materials, components, and manufacturing methods to support design decisions.
- Prepare and maintain technical documentation, such as design criteria, calculation packages, and technical reports.
- Collaborate with engineers, designers, procurement personnel, and fabrication teams to support equipment development and assembly.
- Review vendor information and help resolve design or manufacturing issues.
- Participate in engineering design reviews and project meetings to communicate progress and discuss technical challenges.
- Support equipment installation, testing, and commissioning activities.
- Assist with project planning, cost estimates, and proposal development for future work.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical discipline at an accredited university.
- Coursework or project experience in mechanical design, structural analysis, fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, or materials.
- Basic understanding of 3D CAD modeling and engineering drawings.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to manage multiple assignments and communicate progress effectively.
- Ability to work independently while collaborating with a team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and a willingness to learn.
- Eligibility to obtain required U.S. Government authorizations under export control regulations.
- Experience with SolidWorks, ANSYS, or other CAD and engineering analysis software is helpful.
- Familiarity with fabrication processes, fluid systems, or geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T) is a plus.
- Interest in wind tunnel testing, aerospace engineering, or hypersonic technologies.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship based on-site in Tullahoma, Tennessee.
