About the role#
North Wind is hiring a Mechanical Design Engineering Intern to support the development of precision experimental models and mechanical components for wind tunnel testing. You will work with experienced engineers to gain exposure to 3D CAD modeling, structural design, sensor integration, and advanced manufacturing processes. This role focuses on translating aerodynamic data into physical test models that can withstand demanding wind tunnel environments.
What you'll do#
- Develop 3D CAD models of aerodynamic shapes, mechanical components, and support structures.
- Design model interiors, cavities, and routing channels for sensors and instrumentation.
- Create internal structural components and supports to withstand aerodynamic forces.
- Prepare engineering drawings and apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Perform basic structural analysis and finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate component performance.
- Research material properties and assist with material selection for experimental hardware.
- Coordinate with engineers, machinists, and external vendors during manufacturing and assembly.
- Participate in design reviews, model preparation, and testing activities.
- Document design progress and communicate technical challenges to the team.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
- Basic understanding of 3D CAD modeling and mechanical design principles.
- Familiarity with engineering drawings, dimensioning, tolerancing, and manufacturing processes.
- Coursework or project experience in structural mechanics, materials, dynamics, or FEA.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate within a multidisciplinary team.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Eligibility to obtain a U.S. security clearance.
- Experience with software such as Siemens NX, CATIA, or SolidWorks is preferred.
- Exposure to CNC machining, EDM, or additive manufacturing is a plus.
- Interest in transonic, supersonic, or hypersonic testing environments.
Location & details#
- Location: St Paul, Minnesota.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Employment Type: Full-time intern.
- Compensation: Paid position.
- Note: Candidates must be eligible to work in the United States. Sponsorship is not provided.
