About the role#
North Wind is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineering Intern to support the development of precision experimental models and mechanical components for wind tunnel testing. You will work alongside engineers to gain experience in 3D CAD modeling, structural design, sensor integration, and manufacturing processes. This role focuses on how aerodynamic data is translated into physical test hardware capable of withstanding demanding environments.
What you'll do#
- Develop 3D CAD models of aerodynamic shapes, mechanical components, and supporting structures.
- Design model interiors, cavities, and routing channels for sensors and instrumentation.
- Create internal structural components and supports to handle aerodynamic forces.
- Prepare engineering drawings and apply geometric dimensioning and tolerancing (GD&T).
- Perform structural analysis and finite element analysis (FEA) to evaluate component strength and performance.
- Research material properties and assist with material selection for experimental hardware.
- Collaborate with engineers, machinists, and external vendors to support assembly and manufacturing.
- Participate in design reviews, model preparation, and testing activities.
- Document design progress and communicate technical challenges to the project team.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a bachelor's or master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related technical field.
- Basic understanding of 3D CAD modeling and mechanical design principles.
- Familiarity with engineering drawings, dimensioning, tolerancing, and manufacturing processes.
- Coursework or project experience in structural mechanics, materials, dynamics, or finite element analysis.
- Interest in aerodynamics, wind tunnel testing, experimental hardware, or aerospace engineering.
- Ability to work independently and collaborate within a multidisciplinary team.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
- Effective written and verbal communication skills.
- Experience with software such as Siemens NX, CATIA, or SolidWorks is preferred.
- Exposure to manufacturing methods like CNC machining, EDM, or additive manufacturing.
- Must be eligible to obtain a U.S. security clearance.
Location & details#
- Location: Ronkonkoma, New York.
- Role type: On-site, full-time internship.
- This is a paid position.
