About the role#
NRDC is seeking a Litigation Fellow for a two-year term starting in Fall 2027. This position is part of a bargaining unit and offers an opportunity to work on active cases and case development projects within our litigation team. You will work in one of our U.S. offices while balancing remote and in-office responsibilities.
What you'll do#
- Collaborate with lawyers, paralegals, program staff, clients, and experts on environmental litigation.
- Provide support on cases led by senior attorneys and manage substantial aspects of cases under supervision.
- Conduct legal research, factual investigations, and write briefs, motions, and memoranda.
- Participate in court hearings, manage discovery, conduct document reviews, and prepare for depositions.
- Contribute to institutional goals by managing legal intern hiring, serving on committees, organizing CLE trainings, and engaging in development outreach.
What you'll need#
- A Juris Doctorate (J.D.) with a graduation year of 2024 or later.
- Zero to 3 years of post-graduate experience.
- Admission to the bar of the jurisdiction of practice or a willingness to complete requirements during the first year.
- Strong legal writing, analytical, and oral communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team with a growth mindset.
- Commitment to public service, equity, social justice, and NRDC mission values.
- Demonstrated competency in working with people of diverse social identities.
- Ability to maintain composure under deadline pressure and travel occasionally for case-related meetings.

- Locations: Chicago, IL; New York, NY; San Francisco, CA; Santa Monica, CA; or Washington, DC.
- Term: Fall 2027 through Fall 2029.
- Modality: Hybrid (8 days per month in-office).
- Status: Full-time, paid position.
