About the role#
The Surgical Tech Extern position at Mohawk Valley Health System is a paid, on-site summer 2026 opportunity. This role is designed to help students transition into a professional Surgical Technologist position upon completing the MVCC Surgical Technologist program. You will work in the operating room to support patient care and gain hands-on experience across various surgical specialties.
What you'll do#
- Assist in maintaining a clean, safe, and efficient environment for patient care.
- Utilize aseptic techniques to prepare materials, supplies, and equipment.
- Act as a scrub assistant and gain knowledge of a variety of surgical procedures.
- Set up the operating room for surgical cases, including moving equipment and preparing the sterile field.
- Assist with instrument and sponge counts, patient positioning, and the transport of patients and supplies.
- Monitor the condition of equipment and report any issues or emergent patient situations to staff.
- Adhere to infection control programs and standard precautions.
What you'll need#
- High school diploma.
- Current enrollment and good standing in the MVCC Surgical Technologist program, including completion of the first and second cohorts.
- BLS certification.
- Basic computer proficiency.
- Excellent customer service and interpersonal skills.
