    About the role#

The Storage and Memory Systems Pathfinding team explores next-generation memory, storage, and interconnect technologies for AI, cloud, and high-performance computing. As an intern, you will research photonic interconnect technologies that enable disaggregated memory architectures. You will build modeling and analysis tools to evaluate silicon photonic memory fabrics and assess how optical interconnects impact memory capacity, latency, bandwidth, and energy efficiency for AI workloads.

    What you'll do#

    • Develop parameterized photonic link budget and system-level models for optical memory fabrics, including lasers, modulators, waveguides, switches, photodetectors, and interconnect architectures.
    • Analyze performance, latency, bandwidth, power efficiency, and scalability tradeoffs across photonic memory architectures and technologies like HBM, DDR5, and LPDDR.
    • Evaluate protocol and system-level impacts of CXL-based memory expansion and disaggregated memory architectures.
    • Calibrate and validate models using industry data, simulations, and measurement results.
    • Use AI-enabled tools to improve productivity, data analysis, and technical decision-making.
    • Collaborate with architects and researchers to share findings through technical reports, presentations, and architecture recommendations.

    What you'll need#

    • Currently pursuing a Master's or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Photonics, Optics, Applied Physics, or a related field.
    • 0-2 years of experience through research, internships, projects, or coursework in photonics, optical interconnects, computer architecture, or memory systems.
    • Proficiency in Python and scientific computing tools for modeling and simulation.
    • Coursework or research in silicon photonics, integrated optical devices, or system design.
    • Experience with photonic link budget analysis, optical transceivers, or photonic system modeling is preferred.
    • Familiarity with CXL, PCIe, memory fabrics, or large-scale system interconnects.
    • Knowledge of photonic simulation tools such as Lumerical, GDSFactory, MEEP, SAX, or Simphony.
    • Understanding of AI infrastructure, GPU memory systems, or large language model architectures.
    • Strong analytical, communication, and collaborative problem-solving skills.

    Location & details#

    • This is a full-time, paid internship based in Richardson, Texas.
    • The role is on-site and follows a rolling term.
