About the role#
As a Structural Design Engineering Intern, you will join the Structural Design & Analysis team within Reality Labs. You will work on AR/VR product development, collaborating with teams across product design, manufacturing, materials, and reliability. You will be paired with an experienced structural engineer to build finite element models, analyze designs, and support material characterization.
What you'll do#
- Own a structural analysis project from initial problem definition through to the final readout.
- Build module-level finite element models to assess failure risks, including drop/shock, static strength, and thermo-mechanical stress.
- Use first-principles hand calculations to sanity-check and bound your simulation results.
- Support the correlation and validation of finite element models by comparing them against physical test data.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in an MS or PhD program in Mechanical Engineering, Applied Mechanics, or a related field. Final-year BS candidates with relevant experience are also encouraged to apply.
- A fundamental understanding of solid mechanics, strength of materials, and finite element analysis.
- Experience with FEA software such as HyperMesh, SimLab, Abaqus, or ANSYS through coursework, research, or projects.
- Strong analytical skills based on first principles and clear communication abilities.
- Ability to commit to 12 consecutive weeks of full-time work and an intent to return to a degree program afterward.
- Must obtain and maintain work authorization in the country of employment.
- Preference for experience in explicit dynamics, drop/shock simulation, material modeling, or thermo-mechanical analysis.
- Helpful to have scripting experience in Python or MATLAB for automation and post-processing.
- Prior internship or research experience in consumer electronics or similar hardware environments is a plus.
Location & details#
- Locations: Sunnyvale, California; Redmond, Washington; or Seattle, Washington.
- Modality: On-site.
- Employment type: Full-time internship.
