About the role#
This internship focuses on advancing multimodal large language models and speech-to-speech translation for wearable and AR/VR technologies. You will work with the Reality Labs Research audio team to build models that integrate audio, speech, vision, and language for improved communication and understanding. Internships last between twelve and twenty-four weeks, with rolling start dates throughout the year.
What you'll do#
- Conduct original research in multimodal large language models, speech foundation models, or speech-to-speech translation.
- Build models that jointly reason over audio, speech, visual, and text inputs, or generate natural speech across languages.
- Investigate methods for model pretraining, multimodal alignment, instruction tuning, or streaming inference.
- Design experiments, set baselines, and evaluate model quality, robustness, latency, and computational efficiency.
- Collaborate across teams in speech, audio, computer vision, and language modeling.
- Share your research through presentations, technical reports, and publications.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, Electrical Engineering, Signal Processing, Computational Linguistics, or a related STEM field.
- At least 3 years of experience programming in Python or a similar language.
- At least 3 years of experience with machine learning frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow.
- At least 2 years of experience developing computational models in speech processing, natural language processing, multimodal learning, or audio-visual learning.
- Intent to return to your degree program after the internship.
- Ability to obtain and maintain work authorization in the United States.
- Experience in areas such as multimodal large language models, speech-to-speech translation, speech foundation models, or neural audio codecs is preferred.
- Experience pretraining or fine-tuning large models using distributed training and large-scale datasets.
- Research contributions through publications at venues such as NeurIPS, ICML, ICLR, ACL, EMNLP, CVPR, ICCV, ECCV, ICASSP, or Interspeech.
- Demonstrated software engineering experience through internships, projects, or open-source contributions.
Location & details#
- Location: Redmond, Washington.
- Work modality: On-site.
- Employment type: Full-time intern.
- Compensation: $7,650 to $12,667 per month.
