About the role#
This internship focuses on modeling how people listen and communicate in real-world settings. You will work with multimodal data from wearable devices, such as eye and head movement, speech signals, and acoustic scenes. The goal is to build models that infer states like auditory attention, listening effort, and conversational engagement to inform future audio technologies. This role is for candidates with a background in machine learning, computer science, hearing science, or cognitive neuroscience who want to work at the intersection of these fields.
What you'll do#
- Develop machine learning and statistical models that infer listening and communication behavior from multimodal wearable data.
- Relate model outputs to established hearing science measures to validate your findings.
- Design data collection strategies, benchmarks, and metrics for models trained on limited or ambiguous ground truth.
- Design, run, and analyze human subjects experiments in laboratory and naturalistic listening environments.
- Collaborate with researchers and engineers across hearing science, audio signal processing, and perception science.
- Communicate research agendas, progress, and full analyses of results.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing or holding a PhD in machine learning, computer science, hearing science, auditory or cognitive neuroscience, or a related field.
- At least 2 years of experience with Python for data analysis and modeling.
- At least 2 years of experience in statistical modeling or machine learning at the doctoral level, including time-series or sequential data.
- Research experience with multimodal behavioral data, speech perception, auditory attention, or conversational communication.
- Ability to obtain and maintain work authorization in the United States.
- Intent to return to a degree program after the internship.
- Preferred experience includes PyTorch, wearable or egocentric sensors, hearing-impaired populations, and modeling with weak labels or high-dimensional datasets.
- A proven track record of results through grants, fellowships, patents, or first-authored publications is preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: Redmond, Washington.
- Modality: On-site.
- Term: 12 to 24 weeks with rolling start dates.
- Employment: Full-time internship.
