About the role#
Meta is seeking Research Interns to join the Fundamental AI Research (FAIR) team. This role focuses on multi-agent systems and memory, aiming to build AI agents that reason, learn from experience, and collaborate on complex tasks. You will work on core algorithmic advances and evaluate your ideas at scale. The internship explores how agents retain knowledge across extended interactions, share information, and adapt workflows. Research directions include compact memory representations, inter-agent coordination, and self-improving systems for automated scientific research.
What you'll do#
- Conduct fundamental research on memory and multi-agent collaboration for complex, long-running tasks.
- Brainstorm with mentors, review literature, and formulate focused research questions.
- Develop novel algorithms and architectures for retaining context, sharing knowledge, or adapting agent workflows.
- Implement prototypes and run experiments on agentic benchmarks, comparing against strong baselines.
- Analyze agent trajectories and failure modes to assess memory utilization, task performance, and computational cost.
- Draft research reports or publications and present outcomes to internal or external audiences.
- Contribute research that can be applied to Meta product development.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a PhD in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, Natural Language Processing, or a related field.
- Research or work experience in large language models, deep learning, or reinforcement learning.
- Proficiency in Python, C++, or related languages.
- Ability to obtain and maintain work authorization in the country of employment.
- Proven track record of research results, such as publications at leading AI conferences, patents, or fellowships.
- Experience in areas like agent memory, context compression, multi-agent systems, or agent orchestration.
- Experience building and evaluating language-model agents, including tool use or collaborative workflows.
- Familiarity with deep learning frameworks like PyTorch.
- Experience designing controlled experiments and analyzing large-scale results.
- Ability to work and communicate effectively in a cross-functional team environment.
- Intent to return to your degree program after the internship.
Location & details#
- Locations: Bellevue, WA; Seattle, WA; New York, NY.
- Modality: On-site.
- Duration: 12 to 24 weeks with rolling start dates.
- Compensation: $7,650 to $12,667 per month.
