About the role#
Reality Labs is working on neural interfaces that interpret signals from the body to interact with virtual and augmented realities. This team uses non-invasive measurements like surface electromyography (EMG), inertial measurement units (IMU), and photoplethysmography (PPG) to bridge the gap between user intent and digital action. As an intern, you will join a multi-disciplinary group to study human neuromotor signals and develop machine learning methods to translate them into new interaction techniques.
What you'll do#
- Research and develop neural networks or computational models using sensor data to improve neural interface capabilities.
- Build the tools and infrastructure needed to analyze large, multimodal datasets.
- Adapt machine learning methods to run on distributed clusters and GPUs.
- Collaborate with engineering and Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) teams to turn research into prototypes and user experiences.
- Use quantitative research methods to define and advance the team's research agenda.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a PhD in machine learning, computational neuroscience, speech and language technologies, signal processing, electrical engineering, computer science, statistics, physics, or a related field.
- Fluency in scientific Python and deep learning frameworks like PyTorch, demonstrated through research or open source contributions.
- Experience in machine learning, deep learning, signal processing, computer vision, probabilistic graphical models, or natural language processing.
- Must have work authorization in the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain it throughout the internship.
- Intent to return to your degree program after the internship ends.
- Experience with biosignals or wearable sensor data like EMG, IMU, PPG, or EEG.
- Experience with multi-channel array processing, real-time signal processing, or sequence modeling of time-series data.
- Experience training machine learning models at scale, including distributed or multi-GPU training.
- Experience moving research into prototypes or products, and prior industry software engineering experience.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship.
- Work is on-site in Menlo Park, CA, Burlingame, CA, or New York, NY.
- Internships last between 12 and 24 weeks with rolling start dates.
