About the role#
The Camera Architecture team defines the imaging hardware for AR glasses, VR headsets, and robotics platforms. We connect image sensor technology and optics to the AI and imaging feature stack. As an intern, you will build the quantitative foundation for camera architecture decisions. You will work with architects and sensor, lens, and AI teams to model how hardware parameters impact product features. You will own a project from problem definition to final recommendation.
What you'll do#
- Develop and validate first-principles models of camera imaging performance, such as SNR, MTF, dynamic range, and motion blur.
- Run trade studies on sensor and lens configurations, comparing factors like resolution, pixel size, shutter types, and power consumption.
- Link feature KPIs like photo quality, OCR legibility, and tracking robustness to specific camera hardware specifications.
- Compare performance models against actual sensor and module characterization data to identify gaps.
- Build reusable analysis tools and document your methods for future team use.
- Present findings, assumptions, and risks to architects and cross-functional partners.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing an MS or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Optical Engineering, Physics, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.
- Coursework or research experience in imaging systems, optics, image sensors, signal processing, or computational photography.
- Experience with physics-based modeling, simulation, and data analysis using Python or MATLAB.
- Understanding of CMOS image sensor fundamentals and camera module components.
- Familiarity with image quality metrics, ISP pipelines, or color science.
- Experience training or evaluating computer vision or ML models and their sensitivity to image quality.
- Ability to communicate technical results to both technical and non-technical audiences.
- Intent to return to a full-time degree program after the internship.
- Must possess valid work authorization for the country of employment at the time of hire and maintain it throughout the internship.
Location & details#
- Locations: Sunnyvale, California and Redmond, Washington.
- Duration: 12 weeks.
- Modality: On-site.
- Employment type: Full-time intern.
