About the role#
The Civil Design Intern role applies engineering drafting principles to perform basic drafting work. You will develop drawings and models based on information provided by engineers and designers. This position requires close guidance and involves coordinating with other team members to exchange project information. You may also serve as a field designer to support projects by performing measurements, assisting construction personnel, and researching vendor manuals.
What you'll do#
- Develop 3D models and create plan drawings and details using sketches and design skills.
- Utilize the Operations Drafting/Design Standards Manual and Department Quality Standards for all tasks.
- Report project updates and issues to the Lead Designer.
- Learn and apply national and local engineering codes.
- Participate in meetings, including weekly project sessions.
- Check designs for consistency, safety, operability, and maintenance requirements.
- Navigate 3D models to identify interferences and assess constructability.
- Complete as-builts using RFIs, ECNs, and red-marked drawings.
- Resolve comments on checked drawings and provide lessons learned via the internal database.
- Manage project documentation, including filing master sets and creating knowledge-based guidelines.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing an Associate or Bachelor degree in Computer Aided Design and Drafting Technology or a related field.
- Proficiency with computer-aided drafting programs such as MicroStation, AutoCAD, GeoPak, or NavisWorks.
- Working knowledge of spreadsheets, databases, and computer operating systems.
- Ability to interpret multi-discipline engineering and vendor documents.
- Strong communication skills for interacting with team members, owners, and contractors.
- Ability to work during normal operating hours, with potential for overtime or weekend work as required.
- Must be legally authorized to work without sponsorship.
