About the role#
This internship provides hands-on training for individuals building a career in HVAC systems maintenance and operations. You will work directly with experienced technicians to learn essential technical skills in a professional environment. This role focuses on practical application, preventative maintenance, and troubleshooting commercial building systems.
What you'll do#
- Shadow and assist technicians during routine maintenance, repairs, and system inspections.
- Participate in preventative maintenance for equipment like air handlers, chillers, boilers, and control systems.
- Learn to read and interpret mechanical drawings, building plans, and equipment specifications.
- Assist in diagnosing system issues using testing equipment and troubleshooting methods.
- Document maintenance activities, parts usage, and system performance in facility management software.
- Monitor system performance to support energy efficiency initiatives.
- Attend technical training sessions covering HVAC theory, design, and new technologies.
- Collaborate with the facilities team to understand how HVAC systems integrate with overall building operations.
- Participate in safety training and follow all safety procedures while working on equipment.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in or recent completion of a program in HVAC, mechanical engineering, facilities management, or a related technical field.
- A basic understanding of mechanical and electrical concepts.
- Strong problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
- Good communication abilities and a willingness to learn.
- Ability to work in various environments, including mechanical rooms, rooftops, and occupied spaces.
- A valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
- Willingness to obtain a refrigerant license during the internship.
- Basic computer skills for documentation and research.
- Familiarity with building automation systems, energy efficiency principles, or technical diagrams is a plus.
- Previous exposure to building maintenance or construction is helpful.
- OSHA 10-hour certification or similar safety training is preferred.
