About the role#
As a Mechanical Engineer Intern at Inversion, you will join the team to develop mission-critical hardware for our reentry vehicles. You will work alongside experienced engineers to move systems from early concepts to physical hardware. This is a hands-on role where you will contribute to the engineering lifecycle, including design, analysis, assembly, and testing. You will report to the Director of Mechanical and take ownership of specific engineering projects throughout the summer.
What you'll do#
- Support the design and development of mechanical systems, including brackets, enclosures, mechanisms, tooling, and test equipment.
- Create and revise 3D CAD models, assemblies, engineering drawings, and bills of materials.
- Perform engineering analysis using first-principles calculations, hand analysis, and FEA to assess structural and thermal performance.
- Plan, set up, and execute hardware test campaigns, including functional, vibration, shock, and environmental testing.
- Work directly with manufacturing, technicians, and integration teams to build, inspect, and troubleshoot hardware.
- Create and maintain engineering documentation, such as assembly procedures, test plans, and design specifications.
- Manage well-scoped engineering projects and provide clear updates on progress and technical findings.
What you'll need#
- Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a closely related field.
- Experience with 3D CAD software like NX, CATIA, SolidWorks, or Creo.
- A fundamental understanding of engineering principles, including statics, mechanics of materials, machine design, and heat transfer.
- Demonstrated hands-on experience through project teams, research, personal projects, or previous internships.
- Ability to take initiative and work through ambiguous technical problems.
- Strong attention to detail and a commitment to high-quality work.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to work on a collaborative team.
- Preferred experience includes familiarity with GD&T, structural analysis tools like ANSYS or NASTRAN, and fabrication processes such as machining or additive manufacturing.
Location & details#
- This is a full-time, paid internship for Summer 2027.
- The role is based on-site at our headquarters in Playa Vista, California.
- Due to ITAR regulations, this position requires U.S. citizenship, lawful permanent residency, or protected individual status.
