About the role#
As an Avionics Embedded Software Engineering Intern, you will support the development, integration, and testing of embedded software for our reentry vehicles. You will work within the Avionics team alongside electrical, RF, GNC, and vehicle engineers to develop software that interfaces directly with flight hardware. This role focuses on firmware development, hardware bring-up, and validating software in laboratory and hardware-in-the-loop environments.
What you'll do#
- Develop software for microcontrollers, processors, sensors, and communications interfaces.
- Support board bring-up and hardware-software integration.
- Implement and debug drivers and interfaces including SPI, I2C, UART, CAN, Ethernet, GPIO, and ADCs.
- Execute software tests using laboratory hardware and engineering test fixtures.
- Support real-time software development using an RTOS or similar framework.
- Debug hardware and software issues using oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, debuggers, and serial consoles.
- Create test scripts and analysis tools with Python to automate validation.
- Support the integration of sensors, flight computers, RF systems, and power electronics.
- Analyze anomalies, identify root causes, and work with multidisciplinary teams on corrective actions.
- Document software behavior, test results, and technical findings.
What you'll need#
- Enrollment in a bachelor’s, master's, or doctorate program in computer engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, aerospace engineering, or a related discipline.
- A GPA of 3.0 or above.
- At least 3 months of applied engineering experience, including internships, laboratory work, or project experience.
- Coursework or project experience in embedded systems, computer architecture, operating systems, or real-time systems.
- Programming experience in C or C++.
- Experience developing software for microcontrollers, embedded processors, FPGA-based systems, or robotics platforms.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

- This is a full-time, on-site internship for Summer 2027.
- The role is located in Playa Vista, California.
- This position is paid.
