About the role#
The Walk-in Services team serves as the primary point of contact for nearly 2,000 clients who visit the Silver Spring office each year. This intern works directly with humanitarian immigrants resettling in the DC Metro area to ensure they have access to internal programs and external resources. You will be trained and supervised by an Intake Specialist or the Intake Coordinator.
What you'll do#
- Conduct in-person screenings to assess client eligibility for internal programming and external public benefits.
- Complete program enrollment forms and ensure all required documentation is scanned and filed.
- Assist clients with applications for public benefits, such as cash assistance and medical insurance.
- Manage follow-up calls with potential clients to provide information, reschedule appointments, and answer general questions.
- Track service provision through electronic data entry and organize client files.
- Assist the team in scheduling contract interpreters for appointments.
What you'll need#
- Current undergraduate or graduate student, or someone within 12 months of graduation.
- Ability to commit to at least 24 hours per week for three months.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Proficient digital literacy, including experience with MS Excel, Outlook, and Word.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks.
- Interest in working with humanitarian immigrants and learning about public benefits.
- Fluency in French, Spanish, Amharic, or other languages spoken by the client base is a plus.

- Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. Fall 2026 interns may be eligible for a per diem reimbursement of $15 per day for food and travel costs.
