The Walk-in Services team serves as the primary point of contact for nearly 2,000 clients annually who visit the Silver Spring office. This internship provides direct experience in humanitarian resettlement, focusing on assessing client eligibility and ensuring timely access to essential programming and benefits. You will work under the supervision of an Intake Specialist or the Intake Coordinator to support individuals and families resettling in the DC Metro area.
What you'll do#
- Conduct in-person screenings to determine client eligibility for internal IRC programs and external public benefits.
- Complete enrollment forms and ensure all required client documentation is scanned and filed electronically.
- Assist clients with the application process for public benefits, such as medical insurance and cash assistance.
- Manage follow-up communication with potential clients regarding service inquiries and appointment scheduling.
- Track service provision through consistent electronic data entry and maintain organized client records.
- Assist the team with scheduling contract interpreters for client appointments.
What you'll need#
- Current undergraduate or graduate student, or an individual within 12 months of graduation.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills with the ability to work independently.
- Proficient digital literacy, including experience with MS Office (Excel, Outlook, Word) and the ability to learn new software.
- High level of organization and attention to detail.
- Fluency in French, Spanish, Amharic, or other languages spoken by the client base is considered a plus.
- Academic background in Public Health, Human Resources, Sociology, Political Science, Psychology, International Relations, or Business Administration is preferred.
Location & details#
- Location: Silver Spring, Maryland.
- Term: Fall 2026 (September – December).
- Commitment: Minimum 24 hours per week, including three full working days per week, for a three-month duration.
- Work Modality: On-site.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid internship. Interns may be eligible for a $15/day per diem reimbursement for food and travel costs.
