About the role#
The Adult Education Intern assists refugee and immigrant adults in ESL classes to develop language skills critical for success. This role supports students in building vocabulary, communication skills, and understanding systems necessary for daily life and the American workforce. Interns work under lead instructors to engage with clients, helping them pursue their chosen career pathways and civic engagement.
What you'll do#
- Teach groups of students in multi-level classes using curriculum developed by the lead instructor.
- Assist instructors with classroom management activities and implement literacy and comprehension exercises.
- Support recruitment and outreach efforts to provide information about program services.
- Conduct intake and orientation sessions to help clients set goals and complete enrollment documents.
- Research new curriculum content and prepare educational materials.
- Connect with current and former participants for retention and follow-up activities.
- Submit intern hours through the volunteer dashboard.
What you'll need#
- Strong communication skills to interact with instructors, assistants, and adult learners.
- Fluency in spoken and written English.
- Interest in working closely with a diverse population of adults.
- Comfort working in a cross-cultural environment, both in-person and online.
- Ability to adapt learning activities with limited notice and work in a collaborative, co-teaching environment.
- Availability for at least 9 hours of class time per week for a minimum of 3 consecutive months.
- Must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States.
- Successful completion of a background check.
