The Adult Education Intern supports the International Rescue Committee in Atlanta by assisting refugee and immigrant adults in ESL classes. This role focuses on helping students develop language skills, literacy, and comprehension to navigate daily life, including employment, healthcare, and public systems. Interns work under the guidance of lead instructors to facilitate learning in a multi-level classroom environment.
What you'll do#
- Teach groups of students in multi-level classes following established curriculum.
- Assist instructors with classroom management activities and the implementation of literacy and comprehension exercises.
- Support program outreach, recruitment, student intake, and orientation.
- Research new curriculum content and prepare educational materials.
- Conduct retention and follow-up activities with current and former participants.
- Track and submit intern hours via the volunteer dashboard.
What you'll need#
- Fluency in spoken and written English.
- Strong communication skills to interact with instructors, assistants, and adult learners.
- Ability to commit to at least 9 hours of class time per week for a minimum of 3 consecutive months.
- Interest in working with a diverse adult population in a cross-cultural environment.
- Comfort working with students individually or in groups, both in-person and online.
- Must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States.
- Ability to pass a background check.

- Term: Fall 2026 (beginning the week of September 8, 2026).
- Modality: Hybrid.
- Compensation: This is an unpaid internship.
