    About the role#

The Institutional Capacity of the State Division is seeking a graduate intern to support its Transparency and Integrity thematic area. You will help develop and test AI tools that organize and analyze information from large collections of government and public records. Working with specialists in data and technology, you will build practical tools that help users identify connections and uncover patterns in complex datasets. This role focuses on financial intelligence, anti-money laundering, and the traceability of financial transactions.

    What you'll do#

    • Support the design of implementation blueprints and reference architectures for AI applications and interfaces.
    • Prototype retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and graph-based retrieval (GraphRAG) pipelines, including parsing, chunking, and index design.
    • Design, program, and evaluate AI agents and multi-step workflows while applying safeguards for privacy, explainability, and auditability.
    • Build pipelines that transform digitized documents into structured databases and perform entity resolution and record linkage.
    • Explore AI-assisted network analysis over linked databases to reveal ownership chains and transaction paths.
    • Document your work through architecture diagrams, reproducible repositories, and presentations for technical and non-technical stakeholders.

    What you'll need#

    • Active graduate student (master’s or Ph.D.) in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, or a related field.
    • Minimum of 50% of coursework completed, with a graduation date after the internship period.
    • National of an IDB member country.
    • Strong programming skills in Python and SQL.
    • Experience working with structured and unstructured data, machine learning, and LLM applications.
    • Understanding of databases, data modeling, APIs, and Git-based version control.
    • Ability to document technical work and communicate findings clearly.
    • Fluency in English; working knowledge of Spanish, French, or Portuguese is a plus.
    • Not have family members working at the IDB or IDB Invest and must be a first-time participant in an IDB Group Internship Program.

    Location & details#

    • Location: Washington, District of Columbia, United States.
    • Term: Winter 2027 (January 16th to March 15th, 2027).
    • Modality: On-site, full-time (40 hours per week).
    • Status: Paid internship.
