About the role#
The Sustainability Intern supports environmental initiatives across four business units, including INDYCAR and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. You will work with the Sustainability Program Leader to track emissions, manage waste diversion, and draft reports for new projects. This role involves balancing office-based data analysis with active participation in major racing events.
What you'll do#
- Support the planning and execution of racing events.
- Partner with internal teams and external vendors to implement sustainability initiatives.
- Collect food donations and manage composting with the Facilities team during events.
- Track and measure sustainability efforts, including utility data and waste diversion metrics.
- Interpret data to create reports and actionable recommendations.
- Assist with documentation for sustainability certifications.
- Manage housekeeping and recycling temporary staffing agencies during events.
- Mentor and train event staff team members.
- Coordinate with business operators to integrate sustainability into daily operations.
What you'll need#
- Current enrollment in an undergraduate or graduate degree program.
- Strong proficiency in MS Office, specifically Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks under time constraints.
- Strong communication and relationship-building skills.
- Integrity, attention to detail, and organizational skills.
- A proactive mindset and a commitment to excellence.
- A sustainability background is preferred but not required.
- Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in various weather conditions.
Location & details#
- Location: Indianapolis, Indiana.
- Term: February 2027 through August 2027.
- Modality: On-site.
- Schedule: Standard hours are Monday through Friday, 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM, with required extended hours, evenings, and weekends during race events.
- Travel: Occasional travel to INDYCAR events, up to three times per season.
