About the role#
Join the Post-Irradiation Examination Characterization Department at the Materials and Fuels Complex as a PhD intern. You will support the development of an integrated, autonomous platform designed to test mechanical properties. This work takes place in the Structural Properties Laboratory at Idaho National Laboratory.
What you'll do#
- Build an automated workflow that combines multiple testing modes and length scales.
- Integrate mechanical testing through nanoindentation and tensile tests.
- Use digital image correlation (DIC) and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) to characterize samples.
- Develop intelligent decision-making algorithms to dynamically recommend testing steps based on real-time data.
- Apply Bayesian optimization and Gaussian process surrogate models to select experimental conditions.
- Use active learning and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) to interpret nanoindentation and DIC datasets.
What you'll need#
- Full-time enrollment in a PhD program for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Machine Learning, or Data Science.
- A minimum overall 3.0 GPA.
- Authorization to work in the U.S.
- Experience with Bayesian optimization and Gaussian process surrogate models for adaptive experimental design.
- Experience developing or applying convolutional neural networks for image-based data interpretation.
- Familiarity with active learning methods for real-time decision-making.
- Exposure to materials characterization techniques or automated experimental platforms.
- Required documents: Resume or CV, unofficial transcripts, and current class schedule.
Location & details#
- Location: Idaho Falls, Idaho.
- Term: Summer 2027.
- Modality: On-site, 4x10 schedule.
- Compensation: $36.83 to $41.29 per hour depending on candidacy status.
- Benefits: Paid holiday time off and potential travel reimbursement for eligible interns.
- Physical requirements: Ability to stand, walk, sit, bend, and manipulate tools. Must be able to lift up to 35 pounds.
About Idaho National Laboratory
Idaho National Laboratory is a science-based, applied engineering national laboratory founded in 1949. It supports the United States Department of Energy through research in nuclear science, energy, and national defense. The laboratory operates from an 890-square-mile site and employs over 4,000 people. Its research spans robotics, wind power, biofuels, and critical infrastructure protection.
How to get in at Idaho National Laboratory
Applying early at Idaho National Laboratory gives you a distinct advantage before the applicant pool grows too large. Intern Insider sends an instant alert the moment a role matching your target is published, helping you get your materials in among the first candidates. Getting seen before the pile grows is a practical way to manage the competitive nature of national lab recruitment. You can also improve your response rates by reaching out to the recruiters behind these roles directly to ask about the position or a referral. Intern Insider surfaces the contact information for the people managing these openings, which allows you to move past the standard queue. Reaching out to a human being shows initiative and often provides more clarity on the role than a job description alone.
