About the role#
Join the Experiment Engineering group at the Advanced Test Reactor (ATR) Complex. You will support the development of technical bases for pressure relief valves and contribute to preventative maintenance (PM) interval justification. This internship is for students who want to apply engineering fundamentals to real nuclear facility systems and support safe, reliable operations.
What you'll do#
- Review design documentation, system drawings, operating requirements, and historical maintenance data for pressure relief valves.
- Develop and refine the technical basis behind valve setpoints, sizing, code requirements, and system interfaces.
- Support PM Basis development, including interval justification.
- Analyze historical performance trends, work orders, and component failure data.
- Support engineers with walkdowns, equipment verification, and configuration management checks.
- Prepare technical documentation, calculation updates, and engineering memos.
- Participate in team meetings, safety reviews, and discussions related to system reliability and regulatory compliance.
- Review and prepare portions of experiment safety analysis documentation.
- Learn the process of irradiating experiments in the Advanced Test Reactor.
What you'll need#
- Full-time enrollment as an undergraduate student in an ABET-accredited engineering program, such as Mechanical, Industrial, or Chemical Engineering.
- A minimum overall 3.0 GPA.
- Authorization to work in the U.S.
- Coursework in fluid mechanics, thermodynamics, or mechanical component design.
- Interest or experience with pressure boundary systems, ASME code concepts, or technical calculations.
- Ability to read engineering drawings and interpret technical requirements.
- Strong analytical skills for evaluating maintenance and reliability data.
- Clear and organized technical writing skills.
- Submission of a current resume, unofficial transcripts, and current class schedule.
Location & details#
- Location: Idaho Falls, Idaho.
- Term: Summer 2027.
